"The content of the RCEL Addendum package focuses on promoting responsive care, responsive feeding, and early learning; monitoring children’s development; promoting and supporting caregiver well-being; and supporting children with feeding difficulties. The package is designed to support community-level counselors and health providers as they provide individual counseling and/or group sessions that encourage these high-priority caregiving behaviors for improved ECD outcomes. The RCEL Addendum is a global package that gives programs the flexibility to adapt the materials to different country contexts and audiences by adjusting the content and delivery modalities. It can be added or integrated into existing child health, nutrition, or infant and young child feeding (IYCF) counseling packages, including UNICEF’s Community Infant and Young Child Feeding (C-IYCF) Counselling Package, which is the model for the RCEL Addendum."

Measuring What It Takes to Provide

We can enhance the effectiveness of programs by recognizing and promoting caregiver resources which enable caregivers to participate in nutrition activities and adopt recommended care and feeding behaviors. Growing evidence suggests that engaging men in nutrition is often associated with improved infant and young child feeding, maternal dietary practices, improved couples’ relationships, and increased joint decision-making. It also has the potential to benefit children, female partners, families, and men themselves. Intentionally engaging men through gender transformative approaches—that seek to promote equity and transform gender relations—is important for improving nutrition outcomes as well as increasing women’s agency and it can have long-term positive changes in gendered power dynamics.

Adolescent Mothers against All Odds (AMAL) Initiative

CARE’s Adolescent Mothers against All Odds (AMAL) Initiative seeks to address the needs of pregnant adolescents and first-time mothers in crisis-affected settings, while simultaneously addressing community consciousness and engagement around gender, power, and social norms. The AMAL initiative includes three main components (i.e., adolescent-centered components, community- centered components and provider-centered components). This toolkit provides program implementers with guidance, session-based curricula, complementary resources, and monitoring, evaluation, and learning tools for the aforementioned three components.
